This is a group effort with two friends of mine from university. All the sprites and level designs are given two us from our Game Physics course. Still the implementation of the physic forces and calculations are developed by us with the MonoGames framework, which is a pleasant change to Unity. Really, I enjoy the documentation from MonoGames so much and I had to call that out.
Racing - Forces - Colliders # BallDrop - Gravity and Rotations # Coming soon… # This assignment isn’t unlocked yet.

Main Idea # I wanted to create an arcade style 2d space shooter like Geometry Wars/Asteroids, because I wanted to see how I can Implement the zero gravity movement and I like avoiding obstacles while sliding really close to them. The name “Sternschnuppe” came first to my mind and I build my idea around it. The Idea was that the player was the last space pilot who survived an ambush by the “Schwarm”, but he isn’t safe yet. The Enemy is right behind him and he is the last hope for humanity. A star in the sky. A shooting star.
Core gameplay # The Player Starts in an 1:1 space, where he can move free in the x- and y-axis. While doing so, the player experiences what it’s to be in an Environment with no friction (Though some is still there). After a while the first wave of enemies arrive and the player has the chance to shoot them away with his blaster on the front. For each kill he gets 10 points. After a while the enemies increase in numbers and try to crash into the player. The Player can take 3 hits. After that the game ends and goes back into the main menu.
Main Challenges # One thing that I noticed, is that Unity isn’t really that well optimized to Linux. It is a bit scaled down and when I hover over an Item, the Text explaining what that Item is, isn’t legible. Other Issues where that I found old documentations and versions of tutorials, that led me onto a wrong path. Other than that Unity seemed Intuitive in some Parts and a bit confusing in others. Unfortunately I couldn’t really figure out how I can build a Windows Version on my system, but that’s on me. I could’ve looked into it sooner.

an example to get you started
This is a heading # This is a subheading # This is a subsubheading # This is a subsubsubheading # This is a paragraph with bold and italic text. My idea was that I could work a lot with colorful lights and holograms, and I thought that would look very attractive as a final product. I also knew that I shouldn’t do too much, as that could quickly exceed my time frame. I limited myself to a modular diorama with a garage, a ramen stand, apartments, and an entrance to an underground club. Later, I added the idea of an elevator. For smaller details, I decided on small flags at the ramen stand, ramps for vehicles at the garage, crates and barrels as seating on the garage, a fence around the entrance to the club, two vending machines behind the garage, and air conditioning units on all buildings.
Modeling # I did not model the car in the garage or the satellite dish myself. I got the car from Polyhaven and the satellite dish from Turbosquid. I thought they were suitable assets for the renderings.
I started with the ramen stand because I already had a clear idea of how it should look. Everything went smoothly, but in retrospect, I wasted a lot of time aligning the individual elements. I entered the coordinates myself in the attribute editor so that the elements would fit together as precisely as possible. I couldn’t do that with the garage, so I found a trick that worked for me. I moved the pivot of individual elements to the corners (d) and then snapped them to the corners of other corners (v). This made it much faster. To manage all the objects and avoid confusion, I sorted all the individual parts into groups and named them accordingly. I tried not to have too many elements in one group. I preserved all the edges afterwards with the multi-cut tool.
Texturing # I used more textures from Polyhaven than the presets from aiStandardSurfaces, as I liked them better in my scene. During texturing, I noticed that the extra lines I made with the multi-cut tool affected the textures. This resulted in unnatural-looking straight lines in some places, which I couldn’t really get rid of. I sent an email about this, but with the deadline so close, I didn’t really expect a reply. If I had started texturing earlier, I would have looked at heightmaps or how to work with nodes. That would have given me even more options for choosing futuristic textures.
Lighting # In my imagination, I always had my project in the evening/night in mind. That’s why I focused on making sure that everything could emit light on its own. In the garage, it’s a very cold light from above that seeps outwards. At the ramen stand, it’s a very warm light that is inviting. In the underground, it’s a red light for those who like it dark. The vending machines have a cold blue light that offers refreshments. The apartments have many colorful lights that fit the cyberpunk genre. The advertising posters that display holograms also glow a little at night. I chose Shanghai at night as the HDRI, partly because of the colorful lights. For the final submission, I created 3-point lighting renders from the outside.
Conclusion # I really enjoyed it and I can proudly say that I made this little diorama myself. It taught me a lot about 3D design and also that there is still more to learn. I would like to read more about texturing and how to work better with light reflections. In any case, I need to look at the lines that were created during texturing. I would also like to look at Blender, as I can find more resources for it and because it also runs on my Linux machine. For Maya, I had to switch to a Windows partition. 3D design will probably remain a small hobby of mine, and I will now approach my projects with more enjoyment and knowledge. Incidentally, a friend told me about a project on how to use the Godot game engine to turn a 3D object into a live wallpaper, and I would like to try that next. That’s why I made an effort to ensure that my model looks reasonably good from all angles. It’s designed for Hyprland, and maybe I’ll shoot my shot at it.

an example to get you started
This is a heading # This is a subheading # This is a subsubheading # This is a subsubsubheading # This is a paragraph with bold and italic text. I initially found out about this, whilst scrolling through their website to learn more about the state of the project. At first I was just interested in attending the talks and to network, but then I saw that they were searching for volunteers to help them out. Now given that I’m a university student in Berlin, I couldn’t donate much to FOSS-Projects like Matrix, but I still wanted to support them. So I took my chance and volunteered as tribute from district 12.
The Setup # My first day involved helping out in setting up the venue. I was tasked with building up the merch booth and making sure that each LAB (presentation room) was getting their appropriate signs. After everything was done I had the chance to meet all the other volunteers and grasp the scope of how many people were willing to come for this. They mostly came from Europe, but also came overseas. All with their own interests and yet still connected through this open-source project on the Internet. Sure, there are much bigger events, but this was my first time helping out a community.
Merch Booth # For day two I was tasked with managing the merch booth and selling shirts and mugs. I had a good time talking to other volunteers during presentations and with the attendees during the breaks. Keeping track of the inventory and selling the merch wasn’t too difficult, thanks to the folks managing it the day before. Volunteer Team
Final Thoughts # My only complaint would be that it was too short for me. Well this was entirely at my fault because I couldn’t attend the conference after my shift was over. Reason being that I had pretty tough exams the next week and I had to study for them (got a 1.0 for that). Otherwise I can only say that it was a very exiting weekend meeting new faces, sharing knowledge and helping out a dedicated community. I want to shout-out “Plain Schwarz” for organizing the event and making everything work so seamlessly. And shout-out matrix.org for giving the community a chance to communicate with each other both over the web and in person. See you at the next event (provided that it is in Berlin. I’m still a poor university student).

Hello there! My name is Artjom Schwenk and I welcome you to my website. This is your first point of contact and a guide to finding me in the vast depths of the web. This site is also the beginning of my attempts to make a difference in the computer science and media industry. Let me introduce you to the person behind this website.
I am a Russian-born German living in Berlin. I’m studying International Media and Computing (IMI) at the HTW Berlin - University of Applied Sciences. I am now entering my third semester, where I will focus on collaborative from-scratch development of applications in Java and Python. Additionally, I will concentrate on 3D design, which is one of my core interests. Other interests of mine include Linux and other free and open source software, federated social media and the gaming industry.
Since the first semester, my fellow students have elected me as one of their spokespersons to represent them and their interests to the teaching staff and the university. In my second semester I was part of the organisation team for the IMI-Summer Party 2024. My responsibilities included booking the venue, budgeting, accounting and coordinating the food and drinks for the event.
What can you expect to find on this website? To be honest, I don’t really have a clear vision for the website yet. I have some ideas about blogging about certain topics related to software development, 3D graphics and just my life at university. I am also considering making my statically generated Hugo site compatible with the Fediverse using ActivityPub. With that people can follow my blog and comment on posts using their Mastodon clients. For now, I am using this site to learn more about web hosting, interacting with the global web, and improving my (English) writing skills. I hope you enjoy reading my posts as much as I enjoy writing them.
Have a nice day and don’t hesitate to contact me.
